Erectile dysfunction: What causes it?

When an erection fails to materialize, the initial reaction is often the same: we question ourselves, we doubt, and we put pressure on ourselves. However, in most cases, it is neither a lack of desire nor a lack of willpower.

Hormonal, psychological, arterial, neurological, cavernous, venous… erection problems can have various causes. It’s not uncommon for several factors to be intertwined.

In this article, we explain the most common causes of erectile dysfunction in simple terms. No taboos and no judgment!

What causes erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction of physical origin

Cardiovascular or chronic diseases

From a physiological standpoint, certain vascular, chronic, or metabolic diseases contribute to erectile dysfunction. Atherosclerosis is the prime example! It affects all arteries and can block those in the penis’s corpora cavernosa. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and chronic inflammation are risk factors.

Diabetes is, moreover, one of the most common and severe medical causes of erectile dysfunction in men over 50!

Other conditions such as sickle cell anemia, heart failure, or sleep apnea can also affect erections.

Surgery, medical procedures, or trauma

Radiation therapy to the pelvis, prostate surgery (prostatectomy), or pelvic surgery following cancer treatment and nerve damage can leave lasting effects and pose a risk of erectile dysfunction.

Hormonal imbalances

Hormones play a role in sexual function. Low testosterone or a thyroid disorder are among the contributing factors.

Erectile problems resulting from neurological disorders

Erectile dysfunction can occur when the nerves sending signals to the penis are damaged or impaired. This disrupts the transmission of signals.

Prostate surgery, spinal cord injury (e.g., paraplegia), multiple sclerosis, and stroke can thus cause erectile problems. Other factors such as Parkinson’s disease or alcoholism also play a role.

Certain medications and toxic substances

Tobacco, drugs, alcohol… Abuse of these substances can have a negative impact on sexual function.

Are you taking medication? Various medications for cholesterol, high blood pressure, depression, or anxiety can cause erectile dysfunction. The same applies to certain diuretics or medications used to treat Parkinson’s disease or prostate conditions.

Warning! Never stop your medication on your own. If you suspect a cause-and-effect relationship, consult your doctor.

When psychological factors come into play

It is, of course, possible to experience “temporary setbacks” due to fatigue, stress, or relationship issues within the couple.

Performance anxiety is, moreover, the leading psychological cause of erectile problems. The more pressure you put on yourself, the less your body responds! This is not a weakness, but a human mechanism.

These occasional dips do not necessarily mean there is cause for alarm. By understanding what’s at play, restoring a sense of security within your relationship, and seeking support (sex therapist, couples therapy…), you can overcome this.

However, if your erection has been consistently unstable or even absent for more than 3 months, it’s likely that more serious erectile dysfunction is present.

It’s not easy to talk about. In reality, only 30% to 40% of men affected by ED dare to take that step. And yet, to avoid taking substances or buying ineffective and/or expensive products, a medical diagnosis is preferable before making a decision.
